Takk the Leaper and Takk's Nest (Leaping Hatchling)

Takk the Leaper is a level 14 rare grey raptor that can be found in the north eastern part of Northern Barrens circling the mountains south of Nozzlepot's Outpost. (I have indicated where he is located  on the map below in red.) Before patch 3.3 he dropped the vanity pet Leaping Hatchling pictured on the right in the picture above. The hatchling no longer drops off of him but can now be looted directly from the nest Takk's Nest and is a 100% chance drop. As of 4.2 he drops a green and a decent amount of experience for toons around his level. He also makes an attractive hunter pet for low level horde characters.

Takk the Leaper does not need to be up for the nest to be spawned in and vice versa, they have independent spawn timers which seem to be a couple of hours each (maybe less). I have found him alone before with no nest, I've found just the nest and I've also found both up at the same time. The nest will also only spawn near the location of the rare raptor.

There are three other rare raptors with associated hatchlings and nests and those are:

The other hatchling pets are all still randoms drops from raptor mobs.

There are four spawn locations of the nest (in green on the map above). If you use the tomtom addon for waypoints this macro will be helpful in finding them:

/way 60.0 19.8
/way 62.8 20.2
/way 64.2 23.0
/way 64.9 28.8

Although there are many rares in Northern Barrens (I will not cover all of them), three of them are tamable by hunters. Those three are:

Razormaw Matriarch and Her Nest (Razormaw Hatchling)

Razormaw Matriarch is a level 25 rare raptor that can be found inside the cave at Raptor Ridge in the Wetlands. (I have indicated where the cave entrance is located  on the map below.) Before patch 3.3 she dropped the vanity pet Razormaw Hatchling pictured on the right in the picture above. The hatchling no longer drops off of her but can now be looted directly from her nest Razormaw Matriarch's Nest and is a 100% chance drop. As of 4.2 she drops a green and a decent amount of experience for toons around her level.

Razormaw Matriarch does not need to be up for the nest to be spawned in and vice versa (they have independent spawn timers). I have found her alone before with no nest, I've found just the nest and I've also found both up at the same time as you can see in the video below. The nest will only spawn near the location of the rare raptor.

There are three other rare raptors with associated hatchlings and nests and those are:

The other hatchling pets are all still randoms drops from raptor mobs.

There are four spawn locations of the nest within the cave. If you use the tomtom addon for waypoints this macro will be helpful in finding them:

    /way 70.0 29.1
    /way 71.1 30.9
    /way 67.6 30.7
    /way 69.1 31.5

The respawn time on the nests seems to be between 1-2 hours and Razormaw Matriarch's spawn timer is about the same.

    The Razza

The Razza is a level 40 aggressive rare chimaera that used to spawn in the Dire Maul arena. He now spawns in a ruined gnoll camp west of New Thalanarr up in the mountains. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.)  He is desirable as a hunter pet as he has a unique blue and white skin. There are two other rare chimaeras with unique skins in the game and those are The Evalcharr (Azshara) and Nuramoc (Netherstorm)

The Razza is in the Chimaera family of exotic cunning pets. He can only be tamed by hunters that have the top-tier talent from the Beast Mastery tree Beast Mastery which allows the taming of exotic pets. When tamed he has a couple of special abilities Frost Breath, and Froststorm Breath (his exotic ability) which you can see him using in the screen shot below.

The Razza can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 11497.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar The Razza
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

I'm not sure on his exact spawn timer but I've read people have seen him in under 4 hours and close to 8
    .

    The Evalcharr

The Evalcharr is a level 19 aggressive rare chimaera that can be found just west of Gallywix Pleasure Palace in Azshara. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.)  He is desirable as a hunter pet as he has a unique paint job. There are two other rare chimaeras in the game with unique skins and those are Nuramoc (Netherstorm) and The Razza (Feralas).

The Evalcharr is in the Chimaera family of exotic cunning pets. He can only be tamed by hunters that have the top-tier talent from the Beast Mastery tree Beast Mastery which allows the taming of exotic pets.

The Evalcharr can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 8660.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar The Evalcharr
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

Unfortunately for those looking for him, he is on a relatively long spawn timer. It seems he can spawn anywhere from about 32 to 48 hours since he was last tamed or killed.

    Tsul'Kalu - The Earth Spirit

Tsul'Kalu is a level 28 non-aggressive rare gorilla that can be found to the west of the Venture Company Base Camp just across the river in Northern Stranglethorn Vale. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.) He is one of the three troll gods: Pogeyan <The Fire Spirit>, Mahamba <The Water Spirit>, and Tsul'kalu <The Earth Spirit>. He shares the same model and coloration as Unk'loc a level 53 rare spawn in Un'Goro Crater, but unlike him he is tamable at only level 28.

Tsul'Kalu can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 51661.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Tsul'Kalu
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

He always spawns in the same location and never patrols far. Hes also very easy to spot as he is a HUGE gorilla with an earth shield around him.

Tsul'Kalu's spawn timer seems to be anywhere from 3 hours to 6 hours since he was last tamed or killed. He does not share a spawn timer with the other two troll spirits, all three of them can be up at the same time.

    Mahamba - The Water Spirit

Mahamba is a level 28 non-aggressive rare crocolisk that can be found on the river banks just north of the Venture Company Base Camp in Northern Stranglethorn Vale. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.) He is one of the three troll gods: Pogeyan <The Fire Spirit>, Mahamba <The Water Spirit>, and Tsul'kalu <The Earth Spirit>. He shares the same model and coloration as the Baradin Crocolisks in Tol Barad, but unlike them he is tamable at only level 28.

Mahamba can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 51662.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Mahamba
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

He always spawns in the same location and never patrols far. Hes also very easy to spot as he is much larger than the other crocolisks in the area.

Mahamba's spawn timer seems to be anywhere from 3 hours to 6 hours since he was last tamed or killed. He does not share a spawn timer with the other two troll spirits, all three of them can be up at the same time. (When I found Mahamba, Pogeyan was also up.)

    Pogeyan - The Fire Spirit

Pogeyan is a level 28 non-aggressive rare cat that can be found to the west of the Tkashi Ruins in Northern Stranglethorn Vale. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.) He is one of the three troll gods: Pogeyan <The Fire Spirit>, Mahamba <The Water Spirit>, and Tsul'kalu <The Earth Spirit>. He is especially desirable as a hunter pet as he looks incredibly unique. To me it looks like he's wrapped in plastic wrap.

Pogeyan can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 51663.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Pogeyan
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

He always spawns in the same location and never patrols far. Hes also very easy to spot as hes HUGE.

Pogeyan dead (Left) and tamed (right)
Pogeyan's spawn timer seems to be anywhere from 3 hours to 6 hours since he was last tamed or killed. He does not share a spawn timer with the other two troll spirits, all three of them can be up at the same time. (When I found him Mahamba was also up.)

    Sambas

Sambas is a level 85 hostile rare spawn with approximately 116k health that can be found in several different locations in the Twilight Highlands. The areas Sambas can be found at are located in green on the map below. In my opinion hes one of the best looking tamable hunter pets currently in game. He shares the same model as the Golden King mount, which is the reward for reaching guild level 25.

Sambas is a tamable HUNTER PET. If killed all he drops is a Crystalline Tear of Loyalty. Non-hunters please leave him alone so that he can be tamed.

Taming: You NEED to be level 85 to tame Sambas because he is a level 85 mob. He is a non-elite so he doesn't hit very hard. In the video below I am taming him on my newly dinged 85 hunter with no traps or special abilities used and he didn't even get me below 70% health. You do not need to be BM spec to tame him as he is just a cat with a unique model.

Sambas' NPCScan ID is 50159. Also, when your flying above his spawn points look for the red dots on your mini-map as he is aggressive. Before looking for him also remember to clear your cache if your using npcscan to search for him. Almost every time I'm in a capital city he is instantly cached.

Sambas is also unaffected by phasing within the zone. It doesn't matter how many quests you have done in the Twilight Highlands, if he's up you will see him. He also seems to have roughly a 6-24 hour spawn timer.

My Sambas story: It took me a couple of weeks to find him. I started looking for him casually 2-3 times a day. I would just make my rounds to all of the spawn points but never spent too much time camping. Well a few days ago I was making my morning rounds when the sky went red...yay time to get killed by Deathwing!

Well, as I approach the first spawn point my Npcscan goes nuts because theres Sambas! I managed to record the tail end of the carnage right as we were both killed. Let me tell you, he does NOT respawn after being mercilessly killed by Blizzards cruel sense of humor. It starts the clock over again.

Luckily a few days later I ran across him again, this time we both lived.

Sambas is also one of five rare spawns in the Twilight Highlands. All of them are:

    Tarvus the Vile

Tarvus the Vile is a non-elite hostile level 85 dragonkin rare spawn with approximately 116k health who spawns in the southern most cave on the western side of the Obsidian Forest in the Twilight Highlands. The location he spawns at is shown in blue on the map below. He generally doesn't stay alive for too long once he spawns in as he is in a high traffic area where people are questing and mining.

Tarvus the Vile drops Tarvus's Poison-Scarred Boots, they are bind on equip item level 346 caster leather boots with one red socket. On the ah they should land you a couple hundred gold or they would make nice starter boots for a caster druid. He also drops around 20 gold, and for leveling characters killing him yields a hefty amount of experience.

A note to hunters: It seems that he is immune to Concussive Shot, I'm not sure what other slowing effects he's immune to, if any.

He is also one of five rare spawns in the Twilight Highlands. All of them are:

    Blazewing

Blazewing is a non-elite hostile level 81 rare phoenix with approximately 93k health who spawns in The Scorched Plain in Mount Hyjal. He looks just like Al'ar the Phoenix God, and my all time favorite mount in game Ashes of Al'ar. The location he can be found at is shown in blue on the map below.

Blazewing drops Blazewing's Furious Kilt, which are bind on equip item level 346 leather caster pants with two sockets. On my server they sell for approximately 1,000 gold. He also drops around 20 gold, and I imagine for leveling characters killing him yields a hefty amount of experience.

Be careful when you pull him, he spawns pretty high in the air. As you can see in the video below, my husband tagged him but then proceeded to fall off the side of the mountain. Also, if your on a leveling character be careful where you take him out. There are npcs all over the ground under where Blazewing patrols and its easy to get overwhelmed. He also hits pretty hard.

    Duskstalker

Duststalker is a level 8 aggressive rare cat that can be found in southern Teldrassil east of Gnarlpine Hold. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.)  He is especially desirable as a hunter pet as he looks exactly like the Spotted Frostsaber mount as you can see in the screenshot above.

Duskstalker can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 14430.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Duskstalker
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

Although Duskstalker is rare, he is on a pretty short spawn timer. It seems he can spawn anywhere from 30min to about 1.5hours since he was last tamed or killed.

    Shadowclaw

Shadowclaw is a level 13 aggressive rare cat that can be found just north of the Ruins of Auberdine in Darkshore. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.)  He is especially desirable as a hunter pet as he looks exactly like the Striped Nightsaber mount as you can see in the screenshot above.

Shadowclaw can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 2175.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Shadowclaw
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

Although Shadowclaw is rare, he is on a very short spawn timer. It looks like his timer can be as short as 10 minutes since he was last tamed or killed.

Also, please be aware that he prowls around in stealth as you can see below.

    Deth'tilac

Deth'tilac is a level 85 rare spawn (added in patch 4.2) with a whopping 77,490,000 hp. He can be found in the Molten Front behind the Forlorn Spire. I have indicated where he is located in green on the map below. This is strictly a TAMABLE HUNTER PET. If Deth'tilac is killed all he drops is a Crystalline Tear of Loyalty. If your not planning on taming him, don't be a douche. Leave him alone. More importantly, if you play a hunter and you find another hunter kiting Deth'tilac and doing all the work to tame him please don't try and steal the tame. If anything, help out by throwing a couple of extra traps in front of Deth'tilac to help out. I know the saying is trite, but what goes around comes around.

Deth'tilac has a couple of buffs that you should know about. They are:
    • Molten Will: Deth'tilac's willpower is strong enough to overcome any attempt to tame the beast. Removed when Deth'tilac is low on health.
    • Deth Metal: Deth'tilac's molten shell heats up quickly, increasing movement speed. This effect is reset when Deth'tilac suffers damage.
    • Deth Strike: Deth'tilac strikes an enemy, instantly killing them. This attack cannot be blocked, dodged or parried. Costs Deth'tilac 10% of maxiumum health.
    • Aura of Deth'spair: An aura of deathly despair engulfs nearby enemies, reducing healing taken by 99%.
The name of the game for this tame is to get Deth'tilac's health down to 20% so that he drops his Molten Will buff so that you can tame him. All the while, you need to never be within range of him because his Deth Strike WILL kill you.

This tame is all about kiting. Ice Trap, Snake Trap, Concussive Shot, Serpent Sting, and Revive Pet are your bread and butter for this tame. I also recommend using a throw-away spider pet for this tame (for the extra web ability and for a quick abandon pet instead of revive right before the tame.) I used one of the yellow spiders patrolling in front of the spire.

The idea is to lay an ice trap and a snake trap, send your pet in as a sacrifice and while Deth'tilac is being slowed and smacking your snakes around revive your pet. Each time you send in your pet as a sacrifice Deth'tilac uses his Deth Strike ability on it and this reduces Deth's health by 10% each time. Make sure to continue laying ice traps and snake traps while using Concussive shot to slow and always make sure that there is as much distance as possible between you and Deth'tilac before you begin reviving your pet. I also recommend keeping serpent sting up on him to help you hold threat if there are a lot of other people around. I find that one of the hardest aspects of this tame is other people interfering and pulling Deth off of you and either stealing the tame or ultimately killing him by getting hit by his deth strike when he's near low health.

After a whole lot of kiting and reviving your pet Deth'tilac will loose his Molten Will buff around 20% health. Be ready for the tame here. Make sure that you do not have an active pet out when you start taming. When I successfully tamed him I didn't even bother dismissing my active pet. I revived him and the moment Deth's Molten Will dropped I abandoned him and instantly started the tame. If I had dismissed my pet, I would not have had enough time to tame him before he got close enough to deth strike.

If you have friends with slowing abilities I recommend bringing them along. The first time I attempted a Deth'tilac tame I had a druid with me who was continuously rooting him. Unfortunately I ultimately failed that tame because right toward the end before I could tame a bunch of geniuses ran in and started meleeing him and were killed by his deth strike. It was funny that they died because they certainly deserved it, but unfortunately with loosing 10% health per strike he was killed. =(

    Deth'tilac's NPCScan id is 54322.

He doesn't share a spawn timer with any of the other spiders in the Molten Front (more than one spider can be up at a time) and his timer seems to range anywhere from 6-17 hours.

I have a video below of my successful Deth'tilac tame. It did not go nearly as smoothly as my first attempt, but this one had a better ending. A few moments after pulling a warlock from the opposing faction started dpsing him like he was going to get phat lootz off of him or something... The warlock went all out on him during the whole process, but in the end I got threat back. When his molten will buff dropped I abandoned my pet and instantly started the tame. I finished the tame just as he was about to finish getting his deth strike off on me. I almost peed my pants. o.O This was definitely an incredibly heart-pounding and ultimately very satisfying tame.

New 4.2 Hunter Taming Challenge Rares:

    Lady La-La

Lady La-La is a non-elite hostile level 81 Naga rare spawn with approximately 74k health who spawns in The Clutch in Kelp'Thar Forest in Vashj'ir. The location she spawns at is shown in blue on the map below. She is easy to spot compared to other Naga in the area, as she has a unique model.

Lady La-La drops Lady La-La's Singing Shell, a bind on equip item level 292 (equipable at level 80) healer trinket. On my server it sells for a couple hundred gold. She also drops around 20 gold, and for leveling characters I'm sure killing her yields a hefty amount of experience.

Upon engaging her if you have your sound on you will hear music similar to that of the D.I.S.C.O. item from the WoW TCG. She'll debuff you with Briny Romance (frost damage) all the while she'll have up her Siren's Song which causes all nearby enemies to dance. Thankfully upon her death the music stops.

She is also one of eight rare spawns in Vashj'ir. All of them are:

    Abyssal Depths-
    Kelp'Thar Forest-
    • Lady La-La - Drops a nice level 80 healer trinket
    Shimmering Expanse-

    Poseidus - Reins of Poseidus

    Poseidus
Poseidus is a highly sought after hostile level 81 rare seahorse with approximately 55.8k health who spawns in the under water zone Vashj'ir. He has four different spawn points in the Shimmering Expanse (they are shown in orange on the second map below). He also has one spawn point in the Abyssal Depths in the southern end of Underlight Canyon (that is where I found him).

Poseidus has a 100% chance to drop Reins of Poseidus
, which is a bind on use seahorse mount that can be summoned anywhere in game under water. I have seen very few of these on the Auction House on my server. The few I have seen have generally be listed for about 100,000 gold. He also drops a hefty amount of gold, when I killed him he dropped around 99gold. He also tends to be very generous with other loot, often dropping item level 359 bind on equip gear and pricey formulas and designs. (When I killed him he dropped Blockade's Lost Shield and Formula: Enchant Bracer - Major Strength.)

Subdued Seahorse - Learned from Reins of Poseidus
Nobody (other than Blizzard) knows the exact spawn timer that Poseidus is on, but from information I've gathered its a pretty long one. It is probably as least 72 hours, making this mount very rare indeed.

I will be honest here, I was a little lucky in finding him. I have not really actively camped for him like I did for other rares that drop mounts such as the Time-Lost proto Drake and Aeonaxx. Every morning when I'd log in before doing dailies I would head to Vashj'ir and swim over each spawn point just to see if he happened to be up. I was awfully surprised when my npcscan went off for him this morning. (This is actually the second time I've found and killed him, but the first was toward the beginning of the Cataclysm expansion before he dropped any loot.)

As you can see in the video below I found him in the Underlight Canyon spawn point. He pretty much roams around in one spot so you don't have to look far at all from the points highlighted on the map. He was also not swimming too high off of the sea floor. The first time I found him was just above the Ruins of Theserai Temple, also not swimming too high up. Basically high enough in the water to be out of range of the hostile naga down below.

I have read that flying above the water is a viable way to search for him as NPCScan will pick him up. Although this way may be faster to get from one spawn point to the next, if he is found making your way down to him will take valuable seconds where someone else could snag him. If there is a lot of competition in the area and you plan on AFK camping this guy with NPCScan I recommend sitting your toon right on a spawn point under the water on your Abyssal Seahorse. If you don't already have the Abyssal seahorse, do the first few quest lines in Vashj'ir. It is given out as a quest reward shortly after you start questing there.

Once found, the actual fight with him isn't difficult. He has a couple of attacks that involve bubbles and he'll attempt to run away and heal. He's basically a paladin with fins.

He is also one of eight rare spawns in Vashj'ir. All of them are:

    Abyssal Depths-
    Kelp'Thar Forest-
    • Lady La-La - Drops a nice level 80 healer trinket
    Shimmering Expanse-

    Karoma

Karoma is a level 85 hostile rare spawn with approximately 116k health that can be found in several different locations in the Twilight Highlands. The areas he can be found at are located in pink on the map below.

Karoma is strictly a tamable HUNTER PET. If killed all he drops is a Crystalline Tear of Loyalty. Non-hunters please leave him alone so that he can be tamed.

Karoma has the same model as the Ancient Grimtotem Spirit Guide which used to be tamable by hunters several patches ago. These were wolves though, and could be tamed by any hunter. Karoma seems to be a tribute to those wolves.

Unlike the Spirit Guides, Karoma is a spirit beast. He can only be tamed by hunters that have the top-tier talent from the Beast Mastery tree Beast Mastery which allows the taming of exotic pets.

Taming: You NEED to be level 85 to tame Karoma because he is a level 85 mob. He is a non-elite so he doesn't hit very hard at all. In the video below I am taming him on my newly dinged 85 hunter with no traps or special abilities used and he didn't even get me below 80% health.

Karoma's NPCScan ID is 50138. Also, when your flying above his spawn point look for the red dots on your mini-map as he is aggressive.

Karoma is also unaffected by phasing within the zone. It doesn't matter how many quests you have done in the Twilight Highlands, if he's up you will see him. He also seems to have roughly a 6-8 hour spawn timer.

Once tamed, his special ability is Roar of Courage and his exotic ability is Spirit Mend

Karoma is also one of five rare spawns in the Twilight Highlands. All of them are:

    Olm the Wise

Olm the Wise is a level 48 non-aggressive rare owl (bird of prey) that can be found in the northern part of Felwood. I have indicated where he can be found and where I found him in red on the map below. He is especially desirable as a hunter pet as he has a unique transparent skin. He looks like he could be a spirit beast, but isn't. He is tamable by all hunters in any spec, and is a cunning pet.

Olm the Wise seems to have at least a couple of spawn points, I found him in the northern one.

Olm the Wise can be found with NPCScan. You will need to add it, his NPCScan ID is 14343.

You can also use this macro to help find and tame this guy:
    /tar Olm the Wise
    /stopmacro [noexists]
    /cast Tame Beast

Olm the Wise seems to be on roughly a 7-8 hour spawn timer.
Once tamed, he has a couple of special abilities. They are Snatch which grabs the enemy's weapons, disarming them for 10 seconds and Play which may or may not work on him (in the tool-tip it says "Larger Birds may not be Interested")... In the video below I tried to get him to play like three times but he didn't seem interested, I guess he's a big bird.

    Golgarok

Golgarok is a non-elite hostile level 83 HUGE elemental rare spawn with approximately 134k health who spawns in the Quaking Fields in the most south western part of Deepholm. The location he can be found at is shown in green on the map below. He is easy to spot compared to the other giants in the area because he has a pinkish coloring.

Golgarok drops Golgarok's Tenderized Treads, which are bind on equip item level 333 cloth boots. On my server they sell for approximately 400 gold. He also drops around 20 gold, and I imagine for leveling characters killing him yields a hefty amount of experience.

Be careful when you take him out! There are a lot of giant elites patrolling in the area. If your level 85 it shouldn't be a problem, but at lower levels it easily could be. As you can see in the video below i accidentally backed into one...oops.

Other than being careful for the elites in the area and other non-elite mobs, Golgarok himself isn't too difficult. Interrupt his earthquake if you see him channeling that. Loot. Profit.

    Anthriss

Anthriss is a level 85 rare spawn (added in patch 4.2) with approx 310k hp. He can be found in the Molten Front in the north east corner of the Magma Springs. Unfortunately he spawns in a very high traffic area so he is usually tamed or killed very shorty after he spawns. I have indicated where he is located on the map below.

This is strictly a TAMABLE HUNTER PET. If Anthriss is killed all he drops is a Crystalline Tear of Loyalty. If your not planning on taming him, don't be a douche. Leave him alone.

Anthriss is not a hard spider to tame, so long as you understand how to do it. When you try to tame him he will shoot his Searing Webs at you which will decrease your movement speed by 60% and will kill you after a few short ticks. The only way to remove his searing web is to submerge in lava. You need to be swimming in lava for the buff to be removed. The pool directly in front of him is too shallow to submerge in. The pool just south of it works fine. I have indicated the pool he should be tamed in on the map below and in the screenshot just below it.

Once you are ready to tame, just hit Anthriss with a concussive shot and run into the middle of the pool. Hitting Deterrence would probably be a good idea as well just before you begin the tame. (I forgot to use it and as you can see in the video below I still tamed him without any issues.)

    Anthriss's NPCScan id is 54338.

He doesn't share a spawn timer with any of the other spiders in the Molten Front and his timer is approximately 6-17hours.
