Northern Barrens Rare Spawns

The Barrens. Ahhhh, this zone brings back some fond memories. Barrens chat, pvp at The Crossroads, the first instance I ever stepped foot in (Wailing Caverns), and of course, who could forget Mankrik's wife? Well unfortunately that mega-jerk Deathwing tore the zone in half when Cataclysm came and funked everything up. Fortunately the rares weren't scared off though, as a matter of fact you can still find sixteen of them in Northern Barrens!

Tamable Rares:

Three  Five of these rares are now tamable by hunters as of patch 6.0.2 (when hydras became tamable). You do not have to be beast mastery spec to tame any of them. Humar the Pridelord, the black lion (pictured on the right), used to have a one of a kind unique look and was very highly sought after pre-wotlk. Although I'm sure he's still sought by hunters these days (especially lowbies), there are now two other cats that look just like him. One of those is The Dark Prowler, a level 21 rare in Hillsbrad Foothills (added in patch 5.1). The other is Pitch, the level 76 quest npc in Sholazar Basin. You can find Humar resting under a large tree just north of Ratchet. (On a side note, some of you may remember the wonderful story that Erinys of the Harpy's Nest blog wrote for my 1st blogiversary contest last year about Humar. If you haven't read it yet - please do! It's an amazing story about the bond between hunter & pet, and just an all around wonderful read.)

Dishu, the orange spotted cat, looks exactly like a druid's travel form (pre-mop). Dishu has three different spawn points northwest of The Crossroads. Currently with Battlefield: Barrens going on, Dishu's south-west spawn point is right on top of a hay bale next to a Kor'kron structure.

Dishu is a level 13 rare cat that can be found in four different locations in Northern Barrens. (I have indicated where she can be found in light blue on the map below.) She drops the typical green or white item and decent experience for levelers.

She shares the same model and color as the druid travel form, which make her a fun tame tame for low level hunters. The only other tamable cats in game that share this model and skin are the Ridge Stalkers and Huntresses found in the Badlands, and they range from level 44-46.

Humar the Pridelord

Humar the Pridelord is a level 18 rare cat that can be found north east of Ratchet in Northern Barrens. (I have indicated where he can be found in red on the map below.) He drops the typical green item and decent experience for levelers.


He shares the same model and color as only one other cat in the game, that cat is Pitch who can be found in Sholazar Basin. Pitch however is only tamable at level 76, making humar still quite desirable for low level hunters to tame.

Takk the Leaper and Takk's Nest (Leaping Hatchling)

Takk the Leaper is a level 14 rare grey raptor that can be found in the north eastern part of Northern Barrens circling the mountains south of Nozzlepot's Outpost. (I have indicated where he is located  on the map below in red.) Before patch 3.3 he dropped the vanity pet Leaping Hatchling pictured on the right in the picture above. The hatchling no longer drops off of him but can now be looted directly from the nest Takk's Nest and is a 100% chance drop. As of 4.2 he drops a green and a decent amount of experience for toons around his level. He also makes an attractive hunter pet for low level horde characters. 

Takk the Leaper does not need to be up for the nest to be spawned in and vice versa, they have independent spawn timers which seem to be a couple of hours each (maybe less). I have found him alone before with no nest, I've found just the nest and I've also found both up at the same time. The nest will also only spawn near the location of the rare raptor.

There are three other rare raptors with associated hatchlings and nests and those are:

Dart - Darting Hatchling (Dustwallow Marsh)

Razormaw Matriarch - Razormaw Hatchling (Wetlands)

Ravasaur Matriarch - Ravasaur Hatchling (Un'goro Crater)
