Elwynn Forest - Tamable Rares added in 5.1

When patch 5.1 went live there were quite a few new rares added across the world. Most of these rares were beasts, making them tamable by hunters. These new rares range in level and can be found in starter zones all the way to Outland, giving leveling hunters some fun new pets to seek out along the way!

There were six new rares introduced into Elwynn Forest in patch 5.1, bringing the total number of rares in this zone to thirteen. I will only be covering the new rares in the zone in this post. For the rest of the rares in this zone please see this post: Elwynn Forest Rare Spawns.

None of these new rares have new or unique skins, but a couple of them should stick out as low level pets. Lamepaw the Whimperer has a very interesting brown and grey bi-color skin, which until patch 5.1 could only be found on Ironjaw in Terrokar Forest and Halycon in Blackrock Spire. Bushtail's appealing arctic fox coloration was previously only found in the Pandaren and Worgen starting areas, as well as Winterspring.

I've marked on the map below where you can find each of these new rares. ~

Elwynn Forest Rare Spawns

Elwynn Forest is a lush wooded valley in central Eastern Kingdoms, and home to the great human kingdom of Stormwind (which also happens to be the home of another rare). It is also the starting zone for the human race.

The first rare young humans could potentially run across in Elwynn Forest is Gug Fatcandle, level 4. Gug spawns in front of the closed mine entrance north west of Northshire, and he drops a 4-slot bag called the Fatcandle Bag.

Mother Fang (level 9) is also a very neat looking spider for new hunters to aim for if you like eye-catching skins. There is more info, screenies, etc. about her in this post: Mother Fang.

Fedfennel and Gruff Swiftbite (both level 9) can be difficult to pull by themselves depending on where they spawn in. It is possible to pull and kill their adds and then run out of range to reset these rares though.

Speaking of adds, Thuros Lightfingers (level 9) spawns in a small camp with three adds very close to him (two adds pictured in the screenshot below). If you try to pull him all four will follow you. I was able to take on all of them with my ironman toon (you can see the hairy fight at the end of the video below) but it sure had me a bit nervous so be careful!

All of their spawn timers seem to be fairly close to the 30-45 minute range.

Mother Fang

Tamed Mother Fang at the Mine Entrance
Mother Fang is a level 9 rare red spider that can be found in the Jasperlode Mine north of the Tower of Azora in Elwynn Forest. I marked the entrance to the mine on the map below. She spawns in the very back of the mine and does not patrol away from there. Untamed she is also HUGE so she's pretty hard to miss.

She drops the typical green or white item and a decent amount of experience for leveling characters.

Mother Fang would also make a very nice first rare hunter pet for low level alliance characters. She is the lowest level tamable spider in this color. There are only 2 other spiders in the game that share this model and color. Those are Naraxis, a level 21 rare in Duskwood and Terokkarantula, a level 65 elite quest npc in Terokkar Forest.
